What a great playday!

This being my first one to ‘host’, I was unsure of what to expect or do. It was a lot of ‘stuff’ to load into the truck, out of the truck, set up, and reload into the truck and unload again at home. Whew…that alone was enough to wear me out. It was Bill and Jason’s first playday too. Bill having only been a horse person for all of 1 week, I was worried about him too. I was worried about his safety and fun level. We got there an hour early to set every thing up. We proceeded to play at 11am, and the ‘end’ time was set for 4pm. Turns out….THAT is a long day. Bill and Jason were very helpful….and we learned that Syrah is a bit of a load to haul. She flattened the trailer tires! They were good enough to get there going slow, and once unloaded, Bill took the trailer to the gas station to air up the tires before we headed back home. Also, despite their hatred for each other, and a few squeals, Rose and Syrah traveled together well. Maybe next time, Spirit won’t need to travel in the tack room all alone. (I figured he was safer in there, in case a war broke out between the girls) Before we played, while we were setting things up, we let everyone just run around, something they can’t really do at home. The group that was meeting us, had trailer issues and were unable to contact me to let me know they were running late, so we just got started.

I let the boys, do their own thing, and ask for instruction when they wanted it. I think that was best, otherwise I am just the know it all wife/mom barking orders at them. You know...the whole....let it be 'thier' idea!  Syrah is not ‘afraid’ of anything, except being ‘alone’ or being asked to ‘go fast’. Bill did REALLY good with the yo-yo game and was getting a fairly decent grasp of the circling game. But a few times he, for what ever reason, wanted her to go faster…on a 12’ line. ……so she bolted away from him a few times. Jason was quite the 'teacher' for his dad, and had frequent tasks for Bill to try.  Then Jason suggested Bill try to sideways her over the pole. It was pretty much a no go. They both need a fence. Bill asked me to teach her the fig 8, which she picked up pretty quickly, and I also addressed her need to flee when pressure is put on her…..thus her learning her first steps of sideways. Jason and Spirit, worked on reviewing L1, and he told me he thinks he wants to work on L2 now.....after doing nothing (other than a couple schooling shows) with his pony for the last 1yr and 3mos since he passed L1. But….ok, we can make it a family affair, maybe, and we can all play together in the yard.

As for Rose and I, we did quite a bit more than I expected to. We got to work on all sorts of things. On the 45’ line, we worked on change of direction at trot, yo-yo, sideways over a barrel, driving from zone5, pushing a ball. At liberty we played stick to me, sideways toward, and draw backward from zone 5, and at freestyle we played with learning how to ride from a neck rope….stop, reinback and turn. We also did all the good stuff she knows well, sideways, fq/hq turns. It was no surprise; I was exhausted 3hrs later when the other ladies joined us. They got the trailer stuck between a tree and a propane tank. YIKES! I played a bit with them, but was so tired, I mostly just rambled on. No surprise there! I would have like to join them on a trail ride, but Bill was spent, and had already loaded the truck with all the toys. The cool thing was that one of the ladies was able to help me a bit with Rose. Rose has issues with other horses getting too close to her. So I asked them if they could approach her and offer a cookie, to see if it could change her mind. It did a little, which is the only thing that has ever made any appreciable….positive difference in her. So I think it is a great direction to explore further. 

All in all, Bill, Jason and myself had alot of fun together, and I made new friends.  I don't know how soon I will do another one, simply because it is alot of work to load all that crap in the truck!  And if Bill doesn't come...that means I gotta do it myself!  For now, I am waiting on Jason's soccer schedule to be posted so I can see what Saturdays I even have available, and then plan my horse schedule for the next few months.

A most Wonderful Gift!

Somewhere in the heavens, an Angel came down and kissed one sweet young child.  She is nearly an adult, and clearly has a heart of gold, filled with oooey goooey LOVE.  She drew me the most wonderful, precious gift....a portrait of my son when he was 3yo, saying HI to Snookie.  I just cried when I saw it, as it was a long time ago when I took this picture of them, and as a mother......I miss his 3yo self.  Esther....My Love....Thank You so much for this.  I can't scan my pic of Cha'cote, it is glued in a frame!  So I wanted to get this one before I frame it for life!

Schooling show for Jason & Spirit

Hold on to your knickers, my kid is gonna RIDE!

Well, of course I am not holding my breath on this, but Jason has decided that he wants to complete ALL of level 2 including riding. He has no desire to try and ride Spirit, of which I doubt I would let him attempt it anyways. Spirit just isn’t a riding pony. And certainly not a good choice for a new rider to get his feet wet with. So of course there is better choice than good ole Snookie. No guarantee’s with her either, but she is a pretty safe bet as long is Rose is nearby. She is old, and tired, and as long as she is not pushed into an RBE panic by Rose going walk about without her, she should be perfectly lazy and forgiving for Jason to learn on. So I am debating bareback or a saddle. I do not have a saddle Jason’s size, but she has such a high wither for bareback. Hmmmmm descisions, descisions. Likely it will be bareback, and since it will be walking only for a while, I think we will be ok. I plan to have him start tomorrow, after letting every one out to graze for a while, as it has been raining for 3 days. For goodness sakes……it is almost JUNE……..and it is STILL raining!


Cha’cote has learned a domestic trick of destroying a fence to get the grass on the other side. We are going to have to take action tonight before he pushes the whole thing down. I planned on having him in the back with the others by now, but have been waiting for it to stop raining for good. Maybe July? At least that is how it feels. My only worry is that he will bond to the herd, or get hurt. Descisions, Descisions!

I have a fun day planned with my friend this weekend to take the wonder twins to the local arena for a fun play day. Maybe even get my FSL3 or OLL3 taped. But not holding my breath. The girls have been depressed in the rain, and who knows how they will react at a new place having not gone anywhere in 9mos. Wish me luck and fun. OH….. MY………GAWD! Jason Passed with a 1++

Well, it’s official. Jason Passed with a 1++, and the little darling got higher scores than I did on my OLL1! 3 of his scores were in the 1+, 6 were 1++, 3 were in the 2, and 11 in the 2+…..AND he got a 2++ on rope handling skills and a L3 on his squeeze!

Now, I can only imagine his head is gonna be soooo big it won’t fit through the front door…..and heaven forbid I be able to continue to tell him how to do things. All I can do is cross my fingers and hope his itty bitty ego doesn’t get the better of him. Since he is terrified to ride horses, at this point his Parelli future will only include online and maybe liberty. But, one never knows what the future holds for anyone, let alone a child. So, as always, one day, one step, one task, one pattern, one level, one savvy at a time.

Jasons OLL1 Parelli Audition Pass 1++

Well he did it! My 11yo son has completed OLL1. Here is his audition. I am sending it in tomorrow. This was take 2. Take 1 he was a little chatty in between tasks and we went over in time. So take 2, is a teeny bit "rushed". Spirit of course is still working on getting better in the "back" after trotting, but he is getting better. As an EXTREME RBI, he basically has his throttle on the floor, with the brake pushed down hard too. If you let up on the brake.......he spins his wheels and burns rubber! I am so proud of him. He has trained him all by himself, and is following the Parelli Levels Pathway to a tee. We rescued Spirit from a VERY abusive situation almost nine years ago and he is partialy blind in his right eye from the abuse. After getting kicked by Spirit 7 yrs ago falling off of him, Jason hasn't gotten "back in the saddle" till they started thier Parelli Journey only 6 weeks ago. They still need to refine things, but what a wonderful start they have going. Hope you enjoy, I know I did!

Jason and Sniff THAT!

Jason did wonderful Friday night. I did as planned and hid carrots all around the yard. Explained to Jason the “rules” of the “send”. It took Spirit a few tries, but he finally got the idea that Jason was sending him to something cool. UNTIL we got to the trailer. Even though he sniffed and found the carrots on the tire fenders and running boards, he would not sniff to find it in the back door. He would just jump in, turn around and then eat the carrot. I guess having a pony who is afraid of the trailer, not refusing to get in, even when an 11yo kid is loading him, isn’t such a bad thing. We made several attempts, but he refused to even look at the carrot until he was IN the trailer. So this got me thinking. He obviously isn’t THINKING his way INTO the trailer. He is REACTING his way in.


So I had Jason start yo-yo-ing him up to and back away from the trailer, NOT letting him actually get into it. Voila! He sniffed the trailer, ate the carrot and then jumped in. That was all I was going to have them do for the day. But Jason insisted on doing his list. They ran through all the tasks, doing each of them a little better than last time. His sideways is coming together well. Using the pole gave Jason and Spirit the visual they needed to not go forward. They did not play again over the weekend due to a sleep over and the pool! Tonight he has Scouts and it is suppose to rain, so they will probably get back to it tomorrow or Wednesday.



As for me, I didn’t do anything but give EVERYONE a bath on Saturday. My arms were like limp noodles when I was done. Cha’Cote was a DREAM. He barely moved at all. I was quite proud of him. Snookie, Cha’Cote and Miyagi all had to roll when I was done. Rose never rolls. I guess she just likes to be clean. Spirit for some reason didn’t roll either. Not like him, but he was a glistening white so I didn’t care!



I have some hoof care to get done on Snookie and Rose, so I doubt I will get much done till that is complete. Sighs…..lots of chores to do….Always!

Jason playing in all but 1 task!

Well, what can I say. My kid is a genius! Just kidding….not quite, but he sure is doing good. Still stubborn and argumentative. Bless is little heart. While playing with trailer loading, he just couldn’t get it out of his head that the horse doesn’t HAVE to sniff it before he gets in. And he was determined to get that pony to sniff it. I told him he didn’t have to, but ya know, if the paper says it…..by golly that IS what he is going to do. And his mother, with 38yrs experience with horses, a level 4 Parelli student, instructor and trainer of over 200 horses, was NOT going to tell him otherwise! Of course when Spirit refused to sniff, but kept offering to get in, he conceded with red watery eyes. So tonight, I plan on hiding carrots all around the yard and trailer, and have Jason and Spirit have a big long ‘sniff this” play session. I doubt Spirit will say no, it is just that Jason is still learning the subtleties of the “send”, and with Spirit getting more revved up on circling driving from zones 2-3, I thought it would be better to wait and save it for last in his level one journey, to give him a chance to be more savvy. Maybe he is, maybe he isn’t. I will just have to give him a chance to find out tonight.




Other wise, everything he has been playing in, is going great. He added yo-yo thru a “gate”, we used the barrels as we just don’t have a gate smaller than 12’, except in the back away from his women. So that will be done well after he can do it well between barrels. We moved the sideways with a fence over to a pole, as I think they both better understand it there. Spirit tried to barrel over him a few times at the fence, and it seemed neither was ‘getting’ the don’t go forward part of the sideways. It definitely was better with the pole. We also added the backwards from the nose and lower the head and they both did great with that. Spirit and Jason are also starting to get the porcupine in the HQ’s. The hardest thing for them both is the back up from a trot. He does ok with me, but the two of them have a hard time doing it straight. So I have been having them work on pushing the front end away while backing. It is getting a teeny bit better each day. But I am not worried about it, as the whole point of the exercise is that he can lead and stop safely, keeping from getting run over, and he can. The only task he is not playing in yet in L1 is driving from zone 2. But he will get there soon enough. All in all, they are doing great, and as a mother, I couldn’t be more proud of him.

Jason and 3 new games!

Well, as usual, my own play time has been on the back burner for a week. I couldn’t play fri-sun, as I went to Reno with a friend, to hang out with her while she showed her miniature horses. We had fun….but boy was I exhausted when we got home. Monday it was pouring rain AGAIN! And since my horses hadn’t been out to graze since Thursday, I figured I would let them do that instead. So I encouraged my son to peel himself from the WEE wrestling on TV that he soooo loves, to come and play with his pony. We of course started with everything he has now checked off his list, and added three new ones. He started the squeeze between the barrels, sideways along a fence and ………drum roll please…….trailer loading! Spirit actually loads just fine, but is terrified to do it. So I figure since Jason has already gotten all 4 feet on the pedestal, we should be spend time with friendly with the trailer with no where to go. As, that is all Spirit knows. Get in and go somewhere. The somewhere has most always been a new home, with the exception of two trips to a show. So I can imagine how stressful it is for him, as he probably thinks every time he gets in the trailer, he will be leaving his home behind. Best we start showing him that it isn’t always going to be like that. And hopefully build his confidence with the trailer. Spirit had some trouble with the sideways. I played with him, regardless of my son’s disapproval, as he wants to do it ALL himself. But I needed to figure out the ‘how” to do it, so that Spirit could understand ‘what” we were asking of him, so that Jason could do the “doing”. In the end, Jason was able to get a few steps of sideways by himself. I am hoping to get some play time in myself after giving a lesson on the way home. Jason needs to play again too, so we’ll see how that goes.

My oh My…stubborn kid!

All I can say is Jason is just like ME! He is VERY serious about doing this by himself. All I have to do is set up the task….put a marker where he needs to stand….then tell him the task, and stay out of his way. Sure the tasks are all the same right now….but…I am trying to get him to get himself a little farther down the rope away from Spirit. But it is just easier to put a cone out and tell him to stay behind it than to explain why or how. He just argues with me. He did so good this weekend. Porcupine is getting better, he is more fluid with his carrot stick and rope handling, backing up is getting better. Man that pony sure has the gas pedal stuck down in 1st gear. He is oddly light doing it yo-yo style, but in the leading from zone2 facing same direction, he just doesn’t want to do it for Jason. He does it for me, but there are times when he tests Jason’s leadership and knowledge for sure. Jason is done with his OLL1 patterns and only has a couple of self assessment tasks to go before I will let him tape his audition. We could tape it now, but for the sake of being proper and thorough, he will do each task until he has done it 7 times or more if needed. Anyways, he is working hard on his OLL1, and for the most part, Spirit is on board!

Jason and a Porcupine

Jason and Spirit are doing fantastic. He is using more line in obstacles/patterns such as pedestal and fig 8. Using a cone helped with the pedestal, making him stay behind it. For the fig 8 last night I took a savvy string, made a loop on the ground, and told him he had to keep one foot in it. By golly he figured it out. It is becoming clear, that if I give him a task with markers and just tell him the task, he works out the ‘how” himself. I don’t have to do a whole lot of ‘technique” explaining to him. He figured out on his own, and quickly I might add, that he had to let the rope slide through his hand in order for Spirit to have enough line to make it around the cone. They did lateral flex great, and we added porcupine to the front and back end. Oh geez, I am going to have to get in there and work that one out with Spirit on the hind end. Clearly I didn’t teach him that. But Jason was able, with a long phase 4, to wait it out for one step, and then rub it away. Front end was pretty easy, though it was more of a circle than a turn on the haunches. The more we practice though the better they will get. Spirit is a forwardaholic for sure. He is very hard to get to back up. While he will take a step or two in yo-yo with a phase 1 or 2. In the trot-stop-back up….it is a big ‘heck no’ for him. We are working on his confidence, because if we get a good back up, we lose the trot on the next go. So for now, what we have is this. Trot, stop and rub, then back up anyway we can, then lots of rubbing. Lather, Rinse, Repeat.




Snookie’s boo boo is better, but still healing, and everyone else is good. Cha’cote is getting really good at coming to the gate to be pet before being let out, and he is fantastic at coming in for dinner. Last night, he was down in the ditch behind his shelter when I came with the hay. I called to him, he looked up, watched me for a few steps, and then trotted thru the ditch, jumped into the yard and was over my shoulder by the time I was at his gate. I let him snatch a bite of hay as we walked through his stall, and said my good nights to him. He’s my friend now!

Jason gaining coordination

As usual, the weather gal is off. I have to say….I feel as though the statement…..”it’s raining again” is redundant. But I am so sick of the rain! It was suppose to rain tue/wed/thur this week. And while accurate somewhere…..just not accurate for where I live. It sprinkled a tad on tues, but Jason managed to get in a play session. We tried to tape it, but my batteries in the camera died. He did all the stuff he has been working on, and his coordination is getting a lot better. As far as the pedestal, he has had to be quite close to spirit to get him up there. So I set a cone a couple feet away, and told him to stay behind it. I got his usual pessimistic response “I can’t do that!” I reassured him that he can, and of course he did. So I moved the cone another foot back……again “I can’t”……again…..he did. So another 6in back….you’da thought I was cutting off an arm or something, but again, he did fine. When done, he was so proud of himself. He started on the weave pattern, not to shabby for them. Granted, most of his work is on a relatively short line, he has to have a starting point. Then we tried our hand at driving the front end. Hmmm, not so good. Spirit has his foot planted firmly on the gas pedal. It be came obvious, as my memory from 8yrs ago is failing me big time, that there are some things that I did NOT teach Spirit back then. I was still new to Parelli, was new to owning a bunch of horses, was still new to being a mom, new to being a ranch owner. I guess I just did the minimum required for him to be safe around Jason and for maintenance care. We also did not have the Horsenalities when I was playing with him, AND I was still on the original green pack level one! ……….New strategy…..porcupine front end and then back end, which just so happens to be the next thing to add on his OLL1 self assessment check list. Spirit is still too RB when “driving” even with me. I need to get my hands on the new L1-2 dvd’s for Jason and I to watch together. I would like to see the quality, distance, coordination that they are looking for in the new L1. I think Jason would benefit from seeing it as well. He is OK with me giving him directions….just not ‘showing’ him. Yesterday it poured down rain, but today it is sunny. So I hope we both get to play tonight. I would like to play with Rose in the egg pen, and maybe Cha’cote a little for friendship. Snookie needs her bandage changed….geesh the list gets long fast!

Jason & Spirit day 1

So now that I have a kid who seems to want to play with the horses with me, and is seems sincerely interested in passing OLL1 in Parelli, I thought I would tell you all a little bit about him and his pony Spirit. We rescued Spirit about 8 yrs ago when Jason was 3yrs old. Spirit was severely abused, and deathly afraid of people. He is partially blind in his right eye. With people he is an RBI, on his own and within the herd, he is an LBE. He is very nosey, and always makes a mess of my stuff when he has the opportunity to snoop! He is not bothered by things, but if a human sneezes or makes a sudden move, he jumps out of his skin. I started him with Parelli, back in the beginning, but have done little other than what is required to care for him since. Of course we always handle him naturally when we are with him. For the first year or so, I would lead line Jason on him down the road, and while he was OK, he was a bit jumpy. One day, my friend brought over her son and his pony, for the boys to play together. We were in the round pen, and for the first time I let Jason circle around me. Big mistake. He and his friend got to giggling, Spirit spooked and lurched forward a bit, Jason came tumbling off the back of him, and when he hit the ground it scared Spirit and he kicked out and barely grazed Jason’s head. OMG he bled like a stuck pig. I was wearing a new white sweatshirt and looked like I had murdered someone, as we drove to the emergency room. 30 seconds with the DR, one drop of surgical glue and $1000 later, it stopped bleeding. It seemed Jason would never forgive Spirit for hurting him, and he lost ALL desire to do anything than say hi to him and give him a hug. A couple of years ago, he expressed a desire to show him at the pony/mini show, but due to other circumstances we did not pursue it. Late last year, the ‘circumstances” were gone, and we took him to a show directly after his soccer game, and that is when we came home with the rescue mini’s. Since last fall, Jason has showed more interest IN the horses, wanting to help me feed or open gates, or put the horses away after grazing, but little more.




So last weekend was the spring pony show. It is one of only a handful we can take Spirit to as he is not registered. Jason got to show him in all the classes, rather than share his pony with me, as I had Miyagi. I had him do the obstacle class as last year he was not confident to do it, and I showed him in that class. I asked him if he wanted to try the jumping class and it was a very serious……”NO”. But after the show, he said he wanted to try it next time. I told him he could, but that he would have to practice for it. As he has not practiced for the other 2 shows. He agreed he would and I thought I would hear nothing further from him. The next day I let him play with Cha’Cote for the first time. Both were very patient with each other and I was proud. So the next day I printed him a packet like the ones I make myself for each savvy for each horse. Which includes the self assessment checklist, the patterns, horsenality strategies that apply to that horse and the Audition score card. Stapled together, it is handy to grab and take with me while playing and able to mark things off as we go. I gave him his packet Monday when I got home, but he was heading out the door to boy scouts, and not interested, chattering and interrupting about everything under the sun. I figured his Parelli journey was doomed before it even got started. But, to my surprise and joy, he showed up in the rain with his packet Tuesday night, asking to play and work on his packet. Yeah. So now you are up to speed on their journey. I intend to not interfere or train his pony for him, as he already knows this stuff, but hasn’t really done them for years. Spirit seems to be quite patient and obedient, so unless it is absolutely required, I will stay in the background gently coaching and teaching Jason.



It is easy as parents, to fail your child while teaching them. Disappointment and heartache are usually the theme of ‘teaching” sessions, and lack of interest usually follows discouragement. I will have to be very careful not make him feel wrong while he is learning, and always focus on his and his ponies confidence. Not to micromanage him, and allow him to make mistakes so he can learn from them. As long as Spirits needs are not compromised, I can follow my above principles as a teacher and a mother, and hopefully gain a lifetime friend to share horses with.

Jason & Cha'Cote

This is Not only Jasons first time playing with Cha'cote, but also his first time doing anything 'parelli"

I couldn't be more proud of them both. Cha'Cote a 10yo BLM Mustang, was wild and un halter broke just 3.5mos ago, and Jason....well Jason just doen't do much with the horses. He is starting to get interested....YEAH!

Pony show 4/18/10

Well, first of all, let's not get crazy here.....it was just a schooling show.........but she was soooooooo gooooooooood. So was Spirit....sort of. Last night Spirit went ALL right brain crazy when I was clipping him.....because all the other horses were on the other side of the house. It carried over to today. BUT, my son did a wonderfully savvy job and he got FIRST place in his showmanship class! Now I have to admit....he was the only kid in the class with a right brained horse.....but the judge must have saw his savvy and rewarded him with first. I had him thank the judge and she told him he did a good job. The next biggest highlight was how well he did in halter obstacle. I really didn't think that Spirit would jump the jumps but he did....brilliantly, he went over the tarp, did a fig 8 with plastic bags filled with cans on his bag....jumped the pedestal instead of walking on it, went under the piniata great AND.......AND.....on the ground tying.....he did not want to stand still and was walking around Jason while screaming to the other horses and Jason rubbed him until calm, dropped the lead rope and walked all the way around him....YEAH! I am a very proud mom right now for his level of savvy with a crazy horse, when Jason doesn't play with the horses. All in all, he left with a "ribbon" in every class, though a few were still last place. Lets face it, though we think him beautiful, he didn't have the prettiest head in the pretty head class! He is quite pleased with himself that he got one of each place 1-6.

As for Miyagi and Me, she felt all day that trotting was just too much work, and proceeded at a slow crawl EVERYWHERE! She saw fit to oblige me a few times in the show ring with a trot, but mostly felt like a side of beef. I played the 7 games with her in the small warm up area and she was good. And no, even though we entered, she did NOT have the prettiest head of the class either. We got 2nd place in obstacle though, I think it was that class. I just don't care about showing and honestly my brain is mush after the long day. I know we didn't place in a couple classes because they were bigger classes than ribbons and there were some very beautiful mini's there. But her shining moment was the obstacle class. The first obstacle was a "brick" wall, that I knew she wouldn't jump because of it's size. Instead though, she solved her own little puzzle....I taught her so well....she put a foot on top of it, winked at me and proceeded to pull it down and walk right across her new "bridge". She gave no hesitation at the tarp with a "waterfall" of shiny things next to it, was not happy with the bag-o-cans saddle but didn't let any one but me see her disapproval, walked over the bridge between the trees great......was perfect for the ground tying, right under the piniata....and the last obstacle was a small vertical pvc pipe jump, which at 12" was just too high for cute fatty, and she just knocked it down as she walked over it. I can't complain for sure, she had perfect manners all day, was even nice to Spirit all day. Guess it was her gift to him, seeing as she is a holy terror to him otherwise.

Jason, Spirit, Miyagi and Me, ended the day in liberty class. I nearly passed out keeping her at a gait other than a walk, and Jason did a stellar job catching his pony at the end of the briliant right brain gallop fest. He was the only kid to do Liberty, and for his first time he did good. Next time, he will do better of not giving his pony a phase 4 so many times when a cross eyed look would have sufficed! I refuse to use plastic bags like everyone else as it is just counter productive to what we do here, to "teach" our rescues to act like a fool when they see a plastic bag. Luckily me and miyagi survived our own coronaries, from running at our age and weight!

We took the scenic route home,and it was a wonderful drive. And for a couple of crabby mares, Rose and Snookie sure looked happy to see the short ends of thier herd again. But once they said hello, they split. Typical!
